Children’s Services

The aims of the Tayside Paediatric Diabetes Team are to:

  • offer accessible and consistent support to young people.
  • develop an integrated and flexible team system of care with liaison between paediatric and adult diabetes clinical teams, incorporating a working relationship with primary care teams.
  • keep hospital and primary care staff informed of current management and be available for discussion of problems.
  • keep up to date with current 'best' practice and keep staff, patients and parents aware of new developments.
  • be involved in research and audit in childhood insulin dependent diabetes.
  • offer an individualised approach to insulin therapy which promotes the use of intensive insulin regimens (including insulin pump therapy) for children and young people with diabetes

The targets for the Diabetes Team are:

  • all children to attend specialised diabetes clinics, with integrated services of diabetes nurse specialists, paediatric dietitian, paediatric psychological service and social workers.
  • normal growth and development for the child with diabetes.
  • minimal effect of diabetes on school attendance.
  • target blood sugar levels (HbA1c) for each child.
  • average blood sugar levels (HbA1c) to be measured at each clinic visit by a finger prick sample. Target : below 7.5% avoidance of :
    • admission to hospital for acute complications of diabetes i.e.
    • severe hypoglycaemia
    • diabetic ketoacidosis

To place all children on a local and national computer register in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
